Miss Mary Wilson of the Supremes named Mine Action spokesman
World Renowned Performer, Best-Selling Author, U.S. Cultural Ambassador, Mary Wilson To Raise Awareness About Landmines and Unexploded Ordnance For the Humpty Dumpty Institute
NEW YORK, NY AUGUST 19, 2007 — The Humpty Dumpty Institute is pleased to announce that Miss Mary Wilson of the Supremes will serve as Spokesman for the Institute and will raise public awareness about the worldwide scourge of land mines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs). Mary Wilson, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, was one of the legendary Supremes. Her music is known around the world and she and the Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. In addition to performing, Miss Wilson is the author of "Supreme Faith: Someday We'll Be Together," and the best-seller "Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme." In 2003, Mary Wilson was appointed a Cultural Ambassador by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and under took missions on behalf of the U.S. Department of State in Botswana, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bosnia, Mozambique, Oman, Uruguay, and Argentina. Mary Wilson was recently awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Paine College in Augusta, GA.
Mary Wilson will undertake her first mission for the Humpty Dumpty Institute on October 31, 2007 when she will travel to Sri Lanka to review HDI's mine clearance and dairy development program in the Jaffna Peninsula, followed by a visit to an HDI mine clearance and school feeding program in Laos. Both programs are funded through the United States Department of Agriculture. Miss Wilson will also meet with individuals whose lives have been impacted by landmines. On November 3, and in partnership with the One Sri Lanka Foundation (OSLF), Miss Wilson and her entire band will hold a special benefit at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Proceeds from the concert will be contributed to Sri Lankan charities assisting victims of landmines.
Ralph L. Cwerman, President of the Humpty Dumpty Institute, called Mary Wilson of the Supremes "an original American icon" and said that "HDI is privileged to have her as its new spokesman. Mine clearance programs and landmine awareness around the world will benefit greatly as Mary begins to speak out against these cruel weapons of war."
