On July 16, Constance Milstein welcomed HDI Spokesperson and former U.S. Cultural Ambassador Mary Wilson of the Supremes to New York for two days of events (see photos).
The program began with a lunch hosted by Ms. Milstein at Django Restaurant. Miss Wilson met U.N. Ambassadors who had participated in HDI’s “U.N. Across America Program”, senior U.N. officials who have taken part in HDI’s “U.N. to D.C. Program, and HDI’s NGO colleagues.
The evening program was exciting and fun. Ms. Milstein arranged an event that included entertainment, fine food, and landmine programming at the world famous Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Plaza. With several foreign dignitaries in attendance, including United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Kiyotaka Akasaka, the guests savored an incredible meal while enjoying the equally wonderful views of the city. Mary Wilson sang some of her most famous songs and also spoke inspirationally of her strong devotion towards helping others through education and fostering dialogue among different cultures and nationalities. Miss Wilson’s passion for the work of HDI was obvious as she spoke about the importance of landmine removal programs and the need to help those in less-developed countries. “We are delighted to host Mary Wilson as we work together, through HDI, to bring much needed attention to issues that impact people locally, nationally and globally,” said Ms. Milstein.
On July 17, Constance Milstein and Mary Wilson focused their attention on the problem of hunger in the United States. They travelled to Mt. Kisco, NY to visit Ms. Milstein’s aptly named Connie’s Bakery and General Store which is one of Ms. Milstein’s philanthropic enterprises. Connie’s Bakery trains unemployed members of the community to become master bakers, and all proceeds from the store are redirected to helping others. Ms. Milstein is using this store to further her commitment to fighting domestic hunger and is currently expanding into farmers markets to provide greater access and more nutritional food to food stamp recipients. “I am so grateful to Connie for her engagement and support. All over the world, and even in our own backyards, people need help. It is my privilege and honor to represent HDI and to work with Connie on addressing issues like poverty, food security and world peace,” said Mary Wilson. The occasion allowed a relaxed atmosphere for the Mt. Kisco community to meet the famed singer as well as sample wonderful pastries.
