HDI Arranges for Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) To Meet U.N. Officials, May 9, 2008

Texas Representative Ted Poe, who is a Member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, had a series of substantive meetings with senior United Nations officials on Friday, May 9, 2008. Congressman Poe began the day by meeting with Mr. Gustavo Zlauvinen, Representative of the Director General of the IAEA to the United Nations and Director of the IAEA Office at United Nations Headquarters. The frank conversation focused on IAEA’s attempts to ensure that all countries abide by their commitments not to have nuclear arms programs. This meeting was followed by a roundtable chaired by Mr. Sergio Duarte, the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and his front office team of experts. Discussions included the worldwide campaign against weapons of mass destruction and the need for small arms nonproliferation.

After a working lunch with a representative from the United States Mission to the United Nations, Congressman Poe discussed the global scourge of trafficking in persons with Simone Monasebian, Chief of the New York Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Congressman Poe stressed his commitment to the fight against trafficking and detailed the human suffering that this heinous activity is bringing to people from a number of different countries who are being smuggled across the U.S.-Texas border. The final meeting of the day continued the theme of international threats with the Congressman had an in-depth discussion with Sergey Karev, Deputy Director of the United Nations Counterterrorism Committee Executive Directorate.
