The Humpty Dumpty Institute Hosts Lecture on Health Related Millennium Development Goals at Albany State University

On November 18, the Humpty Dumpty Institute's (HDI) Higher Education Alliance in conjunction with Albany State University (ASU) in Albany, Georgia hosted a lecture series on Health-Related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This lecture was a part of ASU's International Education Week, where prominent speakers from across the world were invited to attend. As part of the collaborative efforts of ASU President Everette Freeman and HDI to expose students on campus to the United Nations, the HDI brought Dr. Sara Hertog, a Demographics Specialist and Population Officer at the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, to lecture on the three health focused MDGs: combating child mortality, improving maternal health, and the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.

The day began with a panel discussion and breakfast hosted by Dr. Melvin Shelton, the Director of the Academic Success Initiatives. Several faculty members and administration officials presented some of their research efforts that had an international dimension to leadership students and an assembly of faculty members. Among the panelists were Dr. Malik of the Life Sciences department who focused on the differences between climate change and global warming and the different strategies required to mitigate each problem. Dr. King-Jupiter presented on the role of social and gender definitions with regard to human and sexual rights. Dr. Eliminian discussed the importance of country-specific models for conducting international business and development ventures.

After the breakfast and panel discussion, Dr. Sara Hertog was the third keynote speaker at the First and Second Year Experience Lecture Series. Dr. Hertog, a demographer and population officer at the Population Division of the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, provided the students with statistics, methodology, and methods that the United Nations uses to quantify and combat the problems in children’s health, maternal health, and infectious or epidemic diseases.

This was the last of three successful lectures this semester at Albany State University organized by HDI. We are looking forward to working with ASU on the program for the spring semester. The first lecture will be “The United Nations and Peacekeeping” presented by Marco Bianchini on January 27.
