HDI’s “U.N. Across America” to Plantation, Florida, March 30, 2009

March 31, 2009

The Humpty Dumpty Institute brought Counsellor Kaisa Hiekkila from the Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations for a special “U.N. Across America” program in Plantation, Florida (view photos). Counsellor Heikkila gave a presentation to 500 high school students on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. She detailed plans and commitments by the international community to achieve these goals by 2015. She also provided an overview about the United Nations and Finland’s role within the U.N. community.

The Finnish diplomat was greeted by Ms. Donna Rose, Director of VALOR Freshman Academy, and introduced by one of the students.

After the presentation the students had the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session with Counsellor Heikkila about what her country is doing to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals and to address the global food crisis, especially under the current economic downturn. After a lunch with faculty members in the media room, Principal Basile gave Counsellor Heikkila a tour of South Plantation High School.

This speaking engagement was one component of the school’s eight week study which is meant to explore and discuss the issue of human rights and children in armed conflict. During this period the students develop a deeper understanding of global citizenship and awareness of international affairs. The study will culminate with individual projects at the end of May.
