Millennium Development Goals
August 2005On 18 August 2005, HDI escorted John W. McArthur, Deputy Director of the United Nations Millennium Project, to Washington DC to brief congressional staff. The briefing, entitled Investing in Development discussed the Millennium Project's report on how to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, the current state of international negotiations, and the developed world's role in fighting global poverty. The Millennium Project is a special advisory body appointed by the U.N. Secretary-General to provide expert advice on achieving the Millennium Development Goals, and is directed by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University's Earth Institute.
John W. McArthur is the Deputy Director of the U.N. Millennium Project and serves concurrently as Associate Director at the Earth Institute at Columbia University. He is a co-author of the U.N. Millennium Project's final report, Investing in Development: A Practical Plan to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Previously John was a Research Fellow at the Center for International Development at Harvard University, where his research focused on the links between institutions, health, geography and economic development. At Harvard he co-edited the Global Competitiveness Report 2001-2002 with Michael Porter, Jeffrey D. Sachs, Peter Cornelius and Klaus Schwab. Prior to that he was Project Manager for the Africa Competitiveness Report 2000/2001. His other publications include articles in the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity and The Lancet. John has an MPhil in Economics from Oxford University, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar; a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University's John F Kennedy School of Government; and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of British Columbia.
