February 2006HDI Executive Director Bill Rigler and Program Manager Caroline Gosselin escorted Simone Monesabian, the New York Director of the U.N. Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC), to Washington on Friday, 17 February 2006.
HDI organized briefings in both the House and the Senate, as well as briefings with individual House offices. The UNODC briefing consisted primarily of describing the pervasive nature of human trafficking and the international efforts to prevent, protect, and prosecute; the close working relationship between UNODC and the U.S. Government; and, the challenges facing the international community in mobilizing a stronger response. The morning briefing in the House attracted approximately 55 House offices, while the afternoon Senate briefing included participants from approximately 30 offices.
Within the context of the upcoming Delegation, HDI also organized individual briefings with the offices of Representatives Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-MI), Katherine Harris (R-FL), Tom Latham (R-IA), Michael McCaul (R-TX), Ted Poe (R-TX), Connie Mack, (R-FL), Virginia Foxx (R-VA), and Donald Payne (D-NJ). Of these, four of the above-listed offices participated in the March delegation.
